“I feel like I’ve lived five lives” (Robin, previous student)

OVERVIEW
RE:act is an intensive, residential acting experience designed to unlock emotional performance under pressure. Through rigorous, somatic, and highly experiential workshops, actors develop deep emotional access, connection to character, and reliable self-regulation.
“exceptional… engaging and empowering” (Sarah, previous student)

RESULTS
Many actors report immediate breakthroughs in emotions they had struggled to access for years. Led by director Richard Elson and grounded in over twenty years of professional directing alongside research in psychology and anthropology, RE:act delivers practical, embodied tools actors can apply immediately to demanding rehearsal rooms, sets, and auditions.
“I’ve been working on trying to access sadness for a year now, and this class was a real breakthrough moment where I found it” (Ben, previous student)

The Approach
RE:act is built around new techniques developed from psychology and somatic triggers that allow the actor to put their bodies into an emotional state that aligns with their character. These techniques are blended with established acting practices to create maximum impact.
There are ten steps: Balance, Dialogue, Somatic Response, Scales, Analysis Pyramid, Core Emotions, Tension, Basic Movement, Expressive Movement and Thought.
Actors will be guided through these with simple exercises that are easy to re-create and can be used to get deeper into character.
“Richard’s genius acronyms have made it easier to remember and I now use them consistently.” (Nikoleta, previous student)

About Richard
Richard’s interdisciplinary directing career spans features, TV drama, documentaries and commercials. Features include ‘A Christmas Star’ (with Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan), and the ‘Horror Scopes’ series of anthologies.

He is known for the award-winning BBC show ‘M.I.High’ and the Netflix documentary ‘Shadow Trade’, an undercover investigation into Thailand’s illegal dog meat trade that resulted in a change to the country’s laws. He took over from Shane Meadows to direct the Co-op campaign ‘Good Causes’, and his documentary short ’78 Breaths’, won at Sheffield Doc/Fest. He has worked worldwide for numerous NGOs such as Oxfam and Save the Children on TVCs and documentaries. His online sketch series for Movember, ‘Paul Mal Barbara’, transferred the West End fringe and he garnered critical acclaim and awards for his series of plays about abuse in the UK prison system, ‘Held’, ‘Walking’ and ‘Dog City’.

“Richard’s session was a delight, engaging students in a workshop that helped them change the way they thought about the relationship between directors and actors. Delivered with confidence, charm and a touch of showmanship. I’d recommend Richard without hesitation. In a world of dry ‘Death by Powerpoint’ lectures, Richard’s sessions are a welcome jolt of electricity.” (Pat Higgins, University of Essex)
